Colorful Words from Latin
Bright Words from Latin Bright Words from Latin Bright Words from Latin By Maeve Maddox Among the numerous Latin words that advise the English jargon are a few that get from Roman words for hues. 1. White Latin albus gives us: alb (thing): a white vestment arriving at the feet and wrapping the whole body, worn by ministry, servers, and others partaking in chapel gatherings. collection (thing): a bound or free leaf book as a rule with for the most part clear pages. The Romans additionally had the word collection: a clear tablet on which the Pontifex Maximus enlisted the main occasions of the year. The Germans were the first to embrace the word collection to allude to a signature book or scrapbook to keep trinkets in. Adolescents used to advanced music collections may not realize that the first ââ¬Å"record albumsâ⬠looked like books with pages. (Do I have to characterize that other weird idea, ââ¬Å"book with pagesâ⬠?) egg whites (thing): an individual from a class of straightforward globular proteins that are solvent in water. Egg whites (additionally egg whites) implies ââ¬Å"egg white.â⬠2. Yellow Latin aureus signified a brilliant yellow; croceus was a saffron yellow. These hues give us: crocus (thing): a little spring blossom developed from a bulb. Crocuses come in yellow, purple, and white; the blossom takes its name from the yellow ones. aureole (thing): the gold plate that encompasses the leader of a holy person in a composition. By expansion, an aureole can be any sort of emanating light encompassing something. In space science, the light that looks out at the edges of the sun during a shroud is an aureole. 3. Green The word for green, viridis, gives us: verdigris (thing): a green or greenish blue toxic color got by the activity of acidic corrosive on copper and utilized primarily in antifouling paints and some time ago in medication. verdant (descriptive word): green with developing plants. Rich gardens are regularly alluded to as verdant. 4. Dark Two words for dark, niger, ââ¬Å"black or exceptionally dim brownâ⬠and coracinus, ââ¬Å"raven black,â⬠give us: Negro (thing): An individual from a darker looking gathering of people groups initially local to sub-Saharan Africa. negroid (modifier): of, looking like, or identified with the Negro race. corbin (thing): out of date word for a raven. corbie (thing): A word for raven or crow in Scots tongue. You may know the word from having perused the melody ââ¬Å"The Twa Corbiesâ⬠in which two carcass crows examine feasting on a fallen knight. corbel (thing): a basic bit of stone, wood or metal extending from a divider to convey weight. Itââ¬â¢s a sort of section. Its connection to the Latin word for dark is shaky. Corbel from Latin corbellus, which is a modest for corvus, ââ¬Å"raven.â⬠The engineering highlight gets its name from the ââ¬Å"beak-like appearance of the structure.â⬠Shouldn't something be said about red? Latin had such a large number of words for red, and English has such a large number of words got from them, that I will spare red for its very own post. With negotiating the Treaty of Versailles, the Paris Peace Conference established the ââ¬Å"League of Nationsâ⬠. The League of Nations is an international peacekeeping organization tasked with resolving international disputes without resorting to military force. Terms of the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles established a plan for the postwar world. One of the most debatable terms of the treaty was the War Guilt clause. The other nations directly blamed Germany for the outbreak of bloodshed. The treaty forced Germany to disarm, to make territorial compromises, and to pay reparations to the Allied powers in the large amount of $5 billion. Meanwhile, US President Woodrow Wilson was opposed to such harsh terms, he was outflanked by the French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau. France was the only Allied power to share a border with Germany, so they to suffered the bulk of the devastation and casualties from the German war machine. The French wanted to weaken Germany to the greatest extent possible. Consequences of the Treaty of Versailles. President Wilson was heavily involved in negotiating the treaty, which reflected his vision for the postwar world isolationists. The US Congress proved a huge stumbling block to ratification. The Republicans but also some Democrat s, where against the treaty, especially Article X. Article X was a committed member-states of the League of Nations to go to war on each otherââ¬â¢s behalf in the event of a groundless act of aggression. The Irreconcilables saw this as a violation of US sovereignty and some believed that it would commit the United States to an alliance system that could eventually lead to another war in the future. Because of the opposition from the Irreconcilables, the Treaty of Versailles was never eliminated by Congress, so therefore the United States never became a member of the League of Nations. According to a 1924 report by the Bavarian authorities, allowing Hitler to serve was almost certainly a huge mistake, since he was an Austrian citizen, he should have been returned to Austria. Hitler served as a dispatch runner on the Western Front in France and Belgium, spending almost half his time at the ââ¬Å"regimental headquartersâ⬠in Fournes-en-Weppes. While behind the front lines he was present at the First Battle of Ypres, the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Arras. The Battle of Passchendaele was also one of the very many battles he was in. Adolf was wounded at the Somme. He was given a medal for bravery. Also receiving the Iron Cross, Second Class, in 1914. He was awarded these things because of a recommendation from Lieutenant Hugo Gutmann. First Class on 4 August 1918, a decoration rarely awarded to one of Hitlers Gefreiterâ⬠rank. He received the Black Wound Badge on 18 May 1918. Hitler became a dictator in 1934, and in 1939 is when he invaded Poland. Thus creating World War II in Europe. The war had put Germany against Italy, Japan, and the ââ¬Å"Axis Powersâ⬠. The aftermath. So after all of the back and forth with the League of Nations, Germany ended up paying for all of the bloodsheds that they had caused in the begging. Russia had suffered just like Germany did in the end, they had to pay a price also. But that price wasnââ¬â¢t money, no it was that they had lost their economy. The US had an awful outcome as while. Causes And Treatment Of Sepsis - 1573 Words
ââ¬ËSepsisââ¬â¢, a lame man might hear of this word and have no clue or whatsoever of what this is ââ¬â but in the real world itââ¬â¢s not something to be happy about and has been a major issue in the medical field. Sepsis is a complex condition which doesnââ¬â¢t have a specific definition, diagnosis or treatment but one thing the medical practitioners are specific of is the origin. Sepsis is from a Greek word called ââ¬Å"Sepoâ⬠which means ââ¬Å"decayâ⬠idiomatically known as ââ¬Å"Blood poisoningâ⬠(Steen C., 2009). The medical field defines it as ââ¬Å"Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) resulting from the presence of pathogens or their toxins as in septicaemia that occurs during an infected state.â⬠(Sepsis Alliance, 2014). It is caused by a systematizedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The organisms involved are staphylococcus and pseudomonas sp. About 60% of patients are as a result of cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria and 40% of gram-positive bacteria attach to binding protein on exterior immune cells identified by ââ¬Å"CD14â⬠receptors (Dob et al. 2007). Perrin (2009) suggested that that the body react to sepsis in three different phases; ââ¬Å"inflammation, thrombosis/coagulation and Fibrinolysisâ⬠. The inflammatory phase of sepsis white blood cells discharges ââ¬Å"proinflammatory cytokinesâ⬠, neutrophils and bacteria stimulates the ââ¬Å"proinflammatory cytokinesâ⬠in severe sepsis however damaging the endothelium stimulating the coagulation cascade. Thrombosis is produced as the coagulation cascade is being stimulated giving rise to ââ¬Å"procoagulant stateâ⬠and ââ¬Å"endothelial damageâ⬠. The final phase; fibrinolysis is slowed resulting to an interruption between clot development and disintegration balance, the imbalance leads to systemic inflammation. Inflammatory Cascade is the throbbing, reddishness, swelling and loss of function in the body which is constantly under attack from aggressive organism but nevertheless has the power to fight such attacks (Steen C., 2009). This is a normal phenomenon because it helps protect the body from injury and endurance from infection and as time goes on the aggressive organism is weakened which makes the body stable and healthy. With all this excess money we could set some good usage to it. We should be careful non to blow the dough on stupid things. Most of the excess measures will travel towards salvaging societal security. So when we need it, it wi ll be at that place when we retire some twenty-four hours. Many people were worrying that it might run out one twenty-four hours but now we donââ¬â¢t have to fuss. Still some Americans believe that our president should be removed from the White House. They know that he had a sexual matter and that he abused his powers to cover-up what he did. Some believe he had other personal businesss as good. It truly isn # 8217 ; t anyone # 8217 ; s concern what he does with his personal life, every bit long as our state is making good. He besides lied under curse seeking to cover-up his dirt. For case the ex-speaker of the house Bob Livingston came out and announced his matter. Merely the smart 1s who decide non to mess around are the 1s who have to worry about anything. Overall the president William Jefferson Clinton to me is making a truly good occupation. Our economy/country is higher than of all time. Un-employment is at an all clip low. We all know he did some thing incorrect but that is his personal life and is none of our concern. It # 8217 ; s excessively bad that Bill has to travel down every bit the 2nd president to be impeached and all the nutrient things that he did will be forgotten. But he choose to make what he did and that was his mistake.

Tim OBriens The Things They Carried The Man Underneath the Helmet Essay Example For Students
Tim OBriens The Things They Carried: The Man Underneath the Helmet Essay Ashley Guevara ENGL 2335-01 Professor Benavides December 9, 2013 The Things They Carried: The Man underneath the Helmet The American Flag has always been representative of the United States of America and the freedom it stands for. One could even call it a symbol, not only of freedom, but of the American people. There are men and women who use this to motivate themselves as they are miles away from their families, fghting for the freedom this flag symbolizes. There are many symbols to represent the american soldiers: the Purple Heart, camouflage, and artillery are only a few. Tim The Things They Carried is a story about the soldiefi humanity, and about how beneath the guns of war there is always the man he shows us this through giving us symbols throughout the story. Early on in The Things They Carried, we are introduced to the young soldier, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, a boy in love and who can*?â⬠° seem to think of anything but his love. He holds a picture of this girl, Martha, in his wallet. He even keeps a keepsake of hers, a pebble, with him at all times. inn the march, through the hot days of early April, he carried the pebble in his mouth, turning it with his tongue, tasting sea salt and moisture. His mind wandered. He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war. On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into day dreams, Just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey shore, with Martha, carrying 640). For Lieutenant Cross, the pebble he carries in his mouth is a symbol of his love for Martha. It is also a symbol of the young soldiefi humanity. What isn*?â⬠° more human than a young person being in love with another? Love is said to be sort of intoxicating, which is why Lieutenant Cross can*?â⬠° seem to focus. We will write a custom essay on Tim OBriens The Things They Carried: The Man Underneath the Helmet specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Hefi too wrapped up in his love for Martha to work like any kind of war machine. When going into battle, many soldiers carry with them something that reminds them of their family, heritage, and culture. This is especially important during the Vietnam War, because in the dense Jungles and constant fear, one can really forget just who they are. However, another character, a soldier named Kiowa, braves through the Jungle by carrying with him his family culture and heritage. Abs a hedge against bad times, however, Kiowa also carried his grandmotherfi distrust of the white man, his grandfathefi old hunting 637). For Kiowa, his grandmothefi beliefs and his grandfathefi tool are the essence of his humanity. He has strong, courageous grandparents whom not only represent his heritage, but his own being. Through a study done on American Indian veterans and their effect on the aftermaths of war, the author states Abs far as I can determine, religious institutions in this country outside of American Indian societies do not have any back into society, honoring their contributions to our freedom, or making use of their experiences, all of which can be found in American Indian cultures(Gross 401). Kiowa s representative of all American Indians that were participating in the Vietnam war. In the same way, his grandfathefi weapon and his grandmothefi intuition is also part of what he represents of the american indian community. He is much more man than war, much more so than his role as a soldier. The final symbol I will introduce is not a physical one. It is a symbol that lies within each of these men, and what makes them more human than all can imagine. Many soldiers return from war with a respect of weapons they may not have had before. They know the power of everything they hold, and what any lone man can do with ny kind of weapon. .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .postImageUrl , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:hover , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:visited , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:active { border:0!important; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:active , .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u49384142d00637f886d32111ae2ab57b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Sexuality in Wiseblood EssayThese men are no different. carried all they could bear and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power of the things they 640). These men are in awe. They are in awe of all the weapons and artillery they need to carry in order to survive, in order to ultimately kill other men. They are in awe of the war itself. They have a respect for everything they are doing, even though they are aware it could ultimately lead to their demise. They do what they need to do in order to protect and serve America and its people. These are true men, not machines of war. They think and feel Just as everyone else does. This solidifies their humanity in one full swoop. They are in awe of all they are, and they should be. The author himself felt it right to speak on behalf of all the men who served, which included himself: Fe served a yearlong tour of duty in Vietnam. This time provided a fertile ground for his writing life, it seems; his reputation as a vivid and honest writer has been forged in the fires of war(Toutonghi Par 2). The fact that made himself a character in the story that he wrote in order to honor the men he served with proves the fact that the men that go in and out of these wars are much more human than they can be seen as. Although they go to war, and sometimes forget themselves for a while, they are still deep down, men and women who are living breathing breakable human beings. The Things They Carried is the story of men in wartime. Men who are preparing to serve the country and possibly lose their lives. Men full of fear and bravery. Men full of despair and hope. Men who love and lose Just as much as people uninvolved in war. These men are the shining example of humanity, Just as means to show us. Although war can change us for a time, it does not change what we are-human. Works Cited Gross, Lawrence W. Elasticity of Demand Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Elasticity of Demand - Essay Example When one of these two changes, the other also tends to change. This tendency is very well described by what is popularly known as Law of Demand. The law of Demand is a general law which need not be applicable in all situations. In certain situations this law seems to be unrealistic. The Law of Demand states that when the price increases, the quantity demanded decreases and vice versa, other things remaining the same. The phrase 'other things remain the same' is an important one that it portrays the exceptions of Law of Demand. The Law of Demand, therefore postulates the direction of change in one variable (price or quantity) due to the change in other variable. The law is silent about the magnitude of change. That means, it does not talk anything about the degree by which demand changes as a result of a change in price. Here lies the importance of Elasticity of Demand. This concept tells us the extent to which demand increases or decreases owing to a decrease or increase in price. Th erefore, Law of Demand is a qualitative measurement whereas Elasticity of Demand is a quantitative measurement. As stated earlier, elasticity is a measure of responsiveness of quantity demanded for a change in price. ... Mathematically, it may be computed as: (Moffatt Mike: Elasticity of Demand) To calculate percentage change in quantity and percentage change in price, the following formulae can be sued: % change in quantity = Quantity (new) - Quantity (old) / Quantity (old) (Moffatt Mike: Elasticity of Demand) % change in Price = Price (new) - Price (old) / Price (old) (Moffatt Mike: Elasticity of Demand) Price Elasticity of Demand The Price Elasticity of Demand is the measure of responsiveness of quantity demand of a product as a result of change in its own price. This is also known as Own Price Elasticity of Demand. This theory measures the rate of response of quantity demanded due to change in price. Price Elasticity is a common phenomenon because price and demand are the two closely related variables. In other words, price is the most important determinant of demand. Price of a product and its demand are negatively correlated, which means when price increases, demand decreases and vice versa. Mathematically, price elasticity of demand can be expressed as below: Price Elasticity of Demand = (% Change in quantity demanded)/ (% change in price) (Moffatt Mike: Price Elasticity of Demand) % Change in quantity demanded = Quantity (new) - Quantity (old) / Quantity (old) (Moffatt Mike: Price Elasticity of Demand) % change in price = Price (new) - Price (old) / Price (old) (Moffatt Mike: Price Elasticity of Demand) Significance of Price Elasticity The calculation of price elasticity alone is not sufficient to an economist for decision making. It is a means to an end. Thus, interpretation is more important than computation. The purpose of calculating elasticity is for analyzing how sensitive is the demand for the product due to a

Special Education in United Stated Research Paper
Special Education in United Stated - Research Paper Example lic school enrollment in the 2008-2009 school year, it is also important to note that when compared with the number of students receiving special education services in the 1980-1981 school year, which was 4.1 million, it can only be estimated that more students will need special education services in the coming years (Aud et al, 2011). According to a report done on behalf of the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, special education is defined as ââ¬Å"instruction that is specially designed to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.â⬠A ââ¬Å"disabilityâ⬠can be further defined as a physical disability, mental disability, or even a learning disability, in which while everything appears to be functioning on the outside, inside the head of the student whatever messages are sent are not clearly received, whether these messages involve spoken or written words, and can impair the ability of the student to do things such as speak, read, spel l, write, or calculate numbers at the same pace as their peers (Aud et al, 2011). These learning disabilities are further defined by scientific terms and research, given names such as autism, Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome, and others (Aud et al, 2011). With the services offered by special education throughout the school systems across the United States today, a means of educating students with any form of disability is now available, and can enable them to not only absorb the information being given to them but also to retain and use that information to their benefit, whether immediately or throughout their life. The individualization of special education is its greatest asset to the educational system, yet it also makes it difficult to give an overall description of what is offered, as well as what it... This paper approves that there can be no doubt that special education has followed its own long and winding road in terms of the services that are offered and the process that takes place. From the days in which those with disabilities were either left to be a burden on their families without a place in the world, to being housed at the expense of others in state institutions, to being allowed to pursue an almost mainstream education alongside their peers, special education has gone from being seen as a social stigma to almost commonplace. This paper makes a conclusion that above all else, a huge debt of thanks and gratitude is owed to the pioneers of special education. To those such as Thomas Gallaudet, who believed that the deaf should not have to grow up in a silent world with no words to sustain them. To John Fisher and Samuel Gridley Howe, who were unwilling to accept that the world of darkness for the blind was the only world they should know. To the politicians and forward-thinkers, the philosophers and the reformers, to everyone who felt that education for all should be the norm, and not an unacceptable, unattainable goal. To those that worked endlessly to make others notice the plight of those left at the mercy of the state, called insane or ââ¬Å"not rightâ⬠because of disability. No matter what laws are passed, no matter what legislation is put in place and what education is received today because of it, without the people of history and their way of thinking, it would not exist at all.

A Bet Against Internet Gambling :: essays
A Bet Against Internet Gambling I love gambling. Who doesnââ¬â¢t? The minute you walk into a casino you are overwhelmed by exciting noises, flashing lights and people having a good time. There is so much excitement it isnââ¬â¢t hard to become addicted, especially after your first big win. The rush you get from winning is something that is hard to parallel. Trust me I know. I almost became addicted. I realized the trouble I was heading for before it was too late. I was a lucky one. Many people arenââ¬â¢t as lucky. It is especially easy for people who live very close to a casino to get addicted because it is so easily accessible. Now imagine if everyone who had a computer had 600+ casinoââ¬â¢s right in their own living room. It is like everyone having access to crack cocaine all the time. Not quite as addictive, but you get the idea. That is why I am for Internet gambling prohibition. Some people might say that prohibition isnââ¬â¢t fair, that there are people who can handle the responsibility. Why should everyone suffer because some people canââ¬â¢t handle it? I would tell them that in making a decision like whether or not Internet gambling prohibition should be enforced the benefits should outweigh the risks. In this case they definitely do. Internet gambling is easy to get hooked on. There are advertisements for casinos at almost all of the major search engines and home pages (ex: yahoo, metacrawler, excite etc.) Many of these advertisements claim that they have free gambling or give away free money. For example one casino will give you $125.00 for a $50.00 deposit. Do you think they would really give you that money if they werenââ¬â¢t confident that you would get hooked and spend it all there or if they thought that they wouldnââ¬â¢t get it all back? Once they have lured you to their websites it is easy for them to get your money. It seems a lot easier to spend virtual casino tokens purchased with a credit card than it is to spend your actual hard earned cash at a real casino. Another obvious problem with having online casinos is that children have easy access to them. There is no way to check ID. Anyone with a credit card number can play. Parents of children who gamble online are legally responsible for the de bt that their children accumulate.

How Our Ability to Get a Job Will Be Influenced
Explain how our ability to get a job will be influenced by our availability and access to resources There are many factors that influence oneââ¬â¢s ability to get a job. These can range from a personââ¬â¢s age, gender and education to a personââ¬â¢s lack of communication skills or contacts. These are known as resources. Certain resources can be available to someone depending on their capability to build and maintain them. The availability of resources to a person can influence who they are, how they live and even effect how they are able to get a job.Resources can be either positive or negative in someoneââ¬â¢s life. Positive resources allow and give a person better chances, especially when I comes to applying for and upholding a job. Access to resources that are of the positive nature are always a bonus for someone who wishes to excel in their life as well as their job. There are a vast range of resources such as ââ¬Å"richerâ⬠lifestyle, better clothes, developmen t of skills, higher education, better contacts and a higher regard in society. Being from a high status group often means that a person has more money.Having more money available to oneââ¬â¢s lifestyle allows for a lot of these positive resources become a reality. Having better clothes and a richer lifestyle can become a reality if a high income is made. However not all resources are influenced by money. Resources such as contacts and social skills are made through oneââ¬â¢s own personal skills. Having a vast range of positive resources gives a person the opportunity to demonstrate their full potential straight way which gives a person a better opportunity to obtain the job that they are applying for.The type of job also depends on the types of resources are needed for the applicant to uphold. Having a lack of resources available to one during an interview for a job could see the applicant unfit, as they do not meet the required outlines of the job. Poor communication skills, lack of education, lack of presentation skills can limit a personââ¬â¢s chances of getting the job they want. They are often the result of having a limited income. Resources are very important when applying for a job and the more positive esources someone has the better chance of obtaining the job. They influence oneââ¬â¢s ability to get a job and are found as either positive or negative. Itââ¬â¢s clear to see that someone having positive resources that fit the criteria of a certain job is going to have the upper hand when finally obtaining that job. However it is obvious that it all depends on the type of job that someone is applying for because someone can be over qualified when applying for a job.

When to Use Whom vs. Who
Knowing when to use whom versus who can be difficult for even the most careful writers and speakers. Many writers and grammarians hope the day comes when whom is cast aside and designated by dictionaries as archaic. Indeed, Paul Brians, a professor in the Department of English at Washington State University, says, Whom has been dying an agonizing death for decades. Until the last nail is placed in the coffin, however, it will be helpful to learn when to use whom versus who in various circumstances. How and When to Use Whom Put simply, use whomââ¬âwhich is a pronounââ¬âwhen it is the object of a sentence. If you can replace the word with her, him, or them for example, use whom. Youll know when to use whom if the pronoun is used in the objective case, or action is being done to the pronoun. Take the sentence: Whomà do you believe? The sentence may sound pretentious, even snobbish. But it is correct because whom is the subject of the infinitive to, as well as the object of the sentence as a whole. Turn the sentence around so that the object is at the end: You were talking to whom? When you replace whom with him, it becomes even clearer: You were talking to him. Were you talking to him? When to Use Who If whom is used for the objective case, who is used for the subjective caseââ¬âwhen the pronoun is the subject of the sentence, or the person creating the action. Take the sentence: Who is at the door? The pronoun who is the subject of the sentence. Check this by replacing who with a subjective pronoun, swapping in she or he for who, as in: She is at the door.He is at the door. Who is always used as the subject of a sentence or clause, and whom is always used as an object. Examples In the following sentences, who is correctly used in the subjective case. You can check this by replacing the pronoun who with another subjective pronoun, such as she, he, or you, for example: Who is coming to dinner? (He is coming to dinner?)Who was that masked man? (He was that masked man? or He was the masked man.)Sally is the woman who got the job. (She got the job.) As previously noted, youll know when to use whom if the pronoun is used in the objective case, or action is being done to the pronoun, as in: To Whom It May Concern. (It may concern him.)I dont know from whom the love letter came. (The love letter came from him.)They fought over whom? (They fought over him? or They fought over them?)After whom do I enter the stage? (I enter the stage after him.)Whom did you recommend for the job? (I recommended him for the job.)For Whom the Bell Tolls (The title of this famous Ernest Hemingway novel is saying, The Bell Rings for Him.) Some of these sentences may sound odd, and this is why the word whom will probably disappear from the English language one day. As used in these examples, whom sounds a little awkward, even when its technically correct. How to Remember the Difference The key to understanding when to use whom or who is knowing the difference betweenà subjectiveà andà objectiveà case. Once you can easily identify the subject and the object of a sentence or clause, you will be able to figure out the correct usage of who and whom. For instance, if you want to decide which is correct in this sentence: Who/Whom should I consider as a college recommendation? Rearrange the sentence so that it will make sense using him or he. Youll come up with the following choices: I should consider him for the college recommendation.I should consider he for the college recommendation. The pronoun him is clearly better. Therefore, the correct word in the sentence above will be whom. Remember this simple trick, and youll always know when to use whom and when to use who.
